The tasty beef stroganoff. The roots of the dish are Russian, and started to appear in our tables long before the Second World War even started. With the Russian roots, Count Pavel Stroganoff’s chef, which happens to be French, developed the dish by adding sour cream and finally naming the dish under the count.
Though it started in Russia, Chinese restaurants started serving it in various hotels long ago, owning and tweaking the dish from the very simple, original recipe. The beef stroganoff that we know today is quite different from the original recipe in dating back in 1871. The original recipe uses pork cubes, instead of the popularized pork strips which what we commonly use today. It is then flavored and drenched in flour, sautéed and sauced with bouillon or spicy mustard. Mushrooms and onions are not part of the traditional recipe this is just later additions to the dish. It is then finished with small amounts of sour cream to round up the dish.
Decades after the first recipe made its way to other regions of the world responsible for the changes of the dish. There are several variations depending on the area. The type of meat used and how it is cut, whether strips or cubes, the addition of potatoes, mushrooms or onions basically owning the simple dish.
Upon hearing the dish, some home cooks stresses on how a stroganoff should be cooked, as it sounds complicated. But the truth is it is very easy and does not need a lot of ingredients. In fact, you can make it with just 5 main ingredients and the finished product is as tasty as you can imagine. Easy 5 Ingredient Beef Stroganoff
- 1 ½ pound beef sirloin cut into ½ inch strips.
- ¼ cup butter or olive oil
- 1 ½ cup beef broth
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cup sour cream
*salt and pepper to taste
- In a bowl, season beef strips with salt and pepper. Drenched it in the all-purpose flour and coat it evenly.
- In a skillet, heat the butter or olive oil. When the oil is hot, brown the beef strips turning slightly for 1-3 minutes on medium-high heat.
- When the meat is finally browned, pour in the beef broth to deglaze the pan. Let the beef simmer in the broth until tender. This can take about 8-10 minutes.
- In low heat, stir in the sour cream to the beef. Be sure that the heat is in low as the cream can curdle on high heat.
- Season with salt and pepper according to your taste.
Serve hot with rice, egg noodles or pasta.
The recipe above is a basic stroganoff with just five ingredients, but of course, you can always add up some onions, mushrooms, mustard and extra spices. When I make stroganoff for some special occasions, I saute the mushrooms with butter and some good white wine to add body and flavor. Though the recipe above is tasty and really easy with just a few things in it, never be afraid to experiment. There are lots of good flavor combinations that can do well in this recipe and you can tweak it the way you want it.
Tip: If you are adding mushrooms or onions in your stroganoff, cook your beef strips first in a pan and then take it out and set aside. Then you can saute your onions and mushrooms and just add the beef after. The strips can overcook and can result in tough, stringy beef pieces that we all don’t want to have.
Beef stroganoff is a recipe that started a long time ago but still making it big on our tables. A great example that few simple ingredients and simple methods will make delicious meals enough for special occasions. You can always make your stroganoff the way you want it, and serve it with anything that you think will suit your taste. The five ingredient recipe is just a backbone to the dish.
